A Dream Deferred/L

A Dream Deferred by Langston HughesLangston Hughes homepage

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Recently I was talking with my daughter. We were joking about my age and my dreams. She queried whether I had been praying the same prayer for 25 years. I looked at her and without hesitation I simply replied yes.
The dream has not been without preparation. It has not been without due diligence. I have traveled to many cities some small, some large promoting my books, speaking to audiences, spreading the word that my father in heaven and put in my spirit. It has not been without struggle or lack of finances but I was born to write,
My nephew once encouraged me to write urban fiction. he said that drugs, crime and sex were the way to go if I wanted to be a best seller.
My mother said I should cater to stereotypes and bojangle my way to a best seller. Give them what they want from an African American writer.
There are others who advise me to write only about African Americans.

Today as I sit in my bathroom curling my hair replaying A Dream Deferred in my mind I wonder if my dreams will become reality, if I will soar as an eagle as God ordained me or if I will pass through this life an "Unheard Voice" or  crying "Silent Tears"?
